My Review

Back in February I was left (impatiently) waiting for the sequel to Chameleon Soul, the first book in the Chequered Flag series, and now I’m so excited to be able to share my thoughts on Twisted Mind with all of you!

Before reading Chameleon Soul, I wasn’t really into the whole race car shindig, until about a week after I reviewed that book I went home for a weekend and went to the NHRA drag races with my family for the first time. And oh my god, it was SO much fun! The thrills! The excitement! Needless to say, that made me even more anxious to get my hands on Twisted Mind because I began to view the story from a completely different angle.

However, I do have to say, even if you’re not a fan of drag racing, race cars, or anything of the sort, Mia Hoddell still does an excellent job of keeping the sport sexy and full of high-intensity, much like the romance that is woven through the story.

I was curious to see how Dustin and Taz’s relationship would grow throughout the story and it was beautiful! Both of them have a lot of demons that tend to keep them down, but together their like this unstoppable force that I just can’t get enough of. I was sad, as usual with Mia Hoddell’s books, that it ended so soon! Though, I will be excited to see if we get a glimpse of them in the third book in this series coming out soon (I hope!).

I leaned in, desperate to feel him.
Finally, his lips grazed mine in barely a whisper of a touch.
A moan of protest slipped from my lips when he parted and the musical sound of Dustin’s husky laugh caused me to shiver.
“We shouldn’t be doing this,” he murmured, shocking me when his lips scraped my ear.
“I really don’t care.”
Dustin cupped my jaw, his thumb swiping over my cheekbone. The touch drew my eyes to his.
“I should though.”
I rested my head further into his palm and covered the back of his hand with my own to keep him there. Turning, I pressed my lips to his palm. “What’s the worst that could happen?”
“You could break me.”
I nipped at the tip of his finger when he trailed it over my bottom lip. “Aren’t we both already broken?”
“You could shatter me like no one else, Taz.” Rather than meet my eyes he stared off into the distance over my shoulder. “You could destroy me.”
I reached up, taking his jaw between my fingers and forcing his attention back to me. “I don’t want to.”
“That doesn’t mean you won’t.”
“No, but it means I’ll do everything in my power to try not to.”
The resolve in his eyes wavered. He couldn’t meet my gaze for long. He exhaled heavily, and his jaw kept tensing beneath my palm.
“Dustin,” I said, drawing his focus back to me. “It’s only a kiss.”
It wasn’t. We both knew I was lying and if we started down this road it would lead to more.
Regardless, Dustin pulled me into him. Pressing on the small of my back, he didn’t stop until I was flush against his chest. With his other hand he swiped back a lock of hair to slide it behind my ear.
He lowered his head, dipping until his forehead rested against mine. “I’m trusting you, Taz.”
I responded in a whisper, “Me too. You’re not the only one who stands to lose, Dust.”
Finally, he closed the gap between us and his lips met mine slowly, but forcefully. He claimed and possessed me, marking me as his with his mouth.
Every ounce of pain and fear was shared through our kiss.
When I parted my lips Dustin’s tongue immediately swept into me. I moaned, raising my arms to encircle him. I ran my fingers through the shaggy locks of hair at the back of his neck, pulling on them until he grunted against me.
Even though no space remained between us, Dustin forced me against him harder then dropped his head to my shoulder. He placed a tender kiss directly over the pulse point in my neck and mumbled against my skin, “Please don’t break me, Taz.”

My Review

The first time I read a book by Mia Hoddell was two years ago and I’m so pleased to be bringing you yet another review for one of her awesome books! All the other books I have previously read by Mia were in the YA genre, so it was quite exciting to dive into the NA genre with this series, and I have to say I couldn’t be more impressed!

A lot of my issues with the NA genre stems from the stories feeling very…fake. And too sickly sweet and overloaded with romance and steamy bedroom scenes. Chameleon Soul, though, has just the right amount of romance while also tackling real life issues that made me feel as if I were also overcoming some challenges, right along with the main characters.

Raine, our main protagonist, was so authentic and awesome. A lot of NA romance characters are seen as these perfect women, but Raine has flaws and struggles that create a more three dimensional person that you can relate to on a much deeper level. Teo, our main hunk, also is not just another guy in the romance genre, he stands out and has awesome qualities (like being a Formula 1 driver? Hello, awesome!). I really liked the way that Mia built up their relationship and melded the two together without it coming off as sappy and cheesy.

This will be the perfect book to pick up just in time for Valentine’s Day and you’ll blow through it so quickly with the fast-paced writing and plot! I finished it in under a couple hours and now I’m aching for the next one! Hopefully we won’t be kept waiting too long 🙂

“Raine, wait!”
Footsteps thundered behind me, forcing me to run faster as my vision began tunnelling. Bouncing off the walls as I rounded corners, I attempted to trace my steps back to the exit through the labyrinth of hallways.
I could hear the footsteps growing louder, as if Nadine was right on my heels, but I couldn’t look without losing my rhythm.
Abruptly, I was jerked to a stop by a hand on my wrist. I spun at the touch, flinging my back against the wall with a scream. My movements were too fast to take anything in.
“What the f*** are you doing here?” The voice that snarled the words was not Nadine’s. Even full of malice I could never forget his tone. Despite that, my brain was no longer thinking logically.
I raised my hands instinctively to shield my face, the line between reality and my memories blurring. The brightly lit corridor was too tight and darkness encroached from every corner.
I was back in the alley. The rough bricks bit into my spine as I cowered into the building praying I could make myself invisible.
“No, not again,” I whimpered, my hands shaking. “Please, not again.”
In my mind they were coming at me, closing the distance.
No matter how tiny I made myself they could still see me.
“Don’t hurt me. Let me go!” White-hot panic rose in my chest, consuming me and fuelling the memory. Everything felt so similar, I wasn’t even seeing what was really in front of me.

How To Claim Your Dragon…

As the head of security of Vegas’s Crown Jewel casino―and its hidden dragonshifter sanctuary―ice dragon Darius Dachien commands respect. Unfortunately, that respect isn’t always reciprocated. In fact, when it comes to the stunning Mei Chen, hostility might be a better word. Which makes things even harder for Darius, since Mei is his dragon mate. Without her, his dragon form is fading fast… and once lost, will be gone forever.

Mei can’t deny the fierce chemistry that simmers between them. If Darius were ever to discover who―or rather, what―she really is, she wouldn’t just lose him, but her place with the dragonshifters. The moment Mei’s past comes crashing into her present, she realizes her time for secrets has ended. Now she must reveal her true self… and risk both her life and her heart with the one man who could destroy her.

I have to say, I’m really loving these Entangled Publishing novels/novellas. They’re short enough that I don’t get bored with the romance, but long enough to build up a connection with the characters and their situations that I don’t feel too much like I need more out of a story. And they’re oh so steamy too…

This particular novel was great! While it did feel a little rushed and confusing in the beginning (probably my own fault since I haven’t read the others in the series and I got confused with some of the dragon jargon they used) I felt that it was all wrapped up well later in the story.

It got really exciting around the 70% mark because everything started coming together and we were really hitting the high plot point of the story. I really enjoyed Mei’s character, as well as Darius’. They were both intriguing in their own ways and when they were together there was a very real electricity between the two. I often feel that sometimes the romance isn’t built up enough, but here it was just right. I didn’t want anymore because I felt it was left off at a good plot point, and I certainly didn’t want any less!

Overall, a really great novel and I’m intrigued to check out the other novels in the series! The entire concept surrounding the dragons/humans and the mating philosophy was really cool too and something I’ve never encountered in a story before, let alone a romance novel.

She wants one night. He wants her forever.

Hayden Summers just landed the job of a lifetime taking pictures for Timemagazine, but she’s determined to leave with no regrets. The first thing on her list? Erase the memory of her cheating ex with a wild night of anonymous sex. The second? Figure out why her best friend, sexy bar owner Jace Jennings, stopped speaking to her the night she told him about the job.

Jace has a problem. Hayden isn’t just leaving the country, she’s risking herlife—just when he’s realized he’s in love with her. When fate traps them in the storage room of his bar together, barely contained desire simmers to surface. In one last attempt to keep her, Jace offers Hayden the one thing she wants: a night of hot sex, no strings attached. But when the night is over, will Jace be able to let her go? And will Hayden leave with her heart intact?

As promised, I had said I was going to read the first one in the series, and I’m so glad I did! I LOVED the relationship between Jace and Hayden and seeing them interact was so, so, cool. Especially in their own novella, whereas in Tempted by the Soldier, we only got to see snippets of it.

Reading this made me want to read the second novel all over again, mostly to see how their relationship has grown and developed. The only thing I wish was that this could be longer! I wanted to see MORE of their relationship and fall in love with each character more. Irregardless, I loved this short little novella, and it was so worth checking out. I hope Nicolette Day decides (or in the process of) putting out more novels either for this series or just in general, because I’ve grown to love her writing!

A sexy category romance from Entangled’s Brazen imprint…

When one touch isn’t enough, why resist?

Road trips are supposed to be fun. Or, at least, full of hot sex. For photographer Lilly Grayson, the fifteen-hour drive to her friend’s wedding with Nate Jennings will be neither. Not that Nate isn’t sexy—the man is six-foot-three-inches of mouth-watering Marine. But Lilly’s been there, done that…and he walked away. Now it’s time for a little payback. The kind that’ll make a man desperate for a taste of what he can’t have.

And Nate wants a taste—so badly that he can barely keep his hands on the wheel. But the scars and ghosts of his last tour still haunt him. He can’t give into temptation, not this time. Lilly deserves a whole man—one who can love her the way she deserves to be loved, even if she doesn’t believe it can happen. And that can’t be Nate. Not when he’s leaving again in two weeks, and this time, he’s not sure he’ll return…

When I say I read this in a few hours, I’m not kidding. It was that good! Recently I’ve been going through somewhat of a reading slump (with finals quickly approaching and trying to balance three jobs) but this definitely brought me out of that. It was face paced, easy reading, super sexy *wink wink* and just a really fun read. I was completely invested in the characters from the get-go and I really liked that they had a deeper and more tragic side to each of them. It definitely brought some depth to them and made them seem like real people.

I did not read the novel previous to this one in the series, and while I do think they can be read apart, I also think there are a couple spoilers here and there about things that I could have read about in the second book. Not that that’s a bad thing (completely my own fault) and now I want to read the first one even more!

I would recommend this for people who like books in the new adult genre and are a bit older. There are quite a few steamy scenes here, not that I’m complaining 😉

#1 New York Times bestselling author Colleen Hoover returns with a new heart-wrenching love story.

When Tate Collins meets airline pilot Miles Archer, she doesn’t think it’s love at first sight. They wouldn’t even go so far as to consider themselves friends. The only thing Tate and Miles have in common is an undeniable mutual attraction. Once their desires are out in the open, they realize they have the perfect set-up. He doesn’t want love, she doesn’t have time for love, so that just leaves the sex. Their arrangement could be surprisingly seamless, as long as Tate can stick to the only two rules Miles has for her.

Never ask about the past.
Don’t expect a future.

They think they can handle it, but realize almost immediately they can’t handle it at all.

Hearts get infiltrated.
Promises get broken.
Rules get shattered.
Love gets ugly.

I picked this up on a whim while I was at school and never had time to read it so I decided to pick it up again once I got home, and my god I am glad I did. I may have to extend my list of favorite books of the year because this is definitely going on there! I have never read a Colleen Hoover book before, but had heard a lot of great things about them, and I think I’ve started myself an addiction with her because now I want to pick up all her other books too.

I really like the form that Ugly Love took on, where we are given slight flashbacks into Miles’ past so we can unravel him as slowly as Tate does. I liked that better than being told upfront everything about him. The whole novel itself is a masterpiece, though, as we explore the lives of both Miles and Tate. I wish it could have gone on longer, but that epilogue certainly will tide me over for awhile!

If you like the New Adult book genre and love romance then this is something you HAVE to pick up. This only took me about 2 days to read, because I simply could NOT put it down and now I’m just dying to buy it on Amazon!

She’s the sexiest secret at East Park University.

Rylan Willow is the top model for East Park Exposed, the university’s underground and insanely successful erotic magazine.

Her friends know her as Evan Cosette, a biochemistry major with a flawless GPA.

East Park Exposed has kept Evan’s tuition paid. All she has to do is keep up the naïve school-girl disguise when she’s on campus and her secret is safe, her two worlds separate.

Until Dallas.

When the magazine runs a co-ed shoot to broaden readership, Evan’s partner is a gorgeous and disgustingly brilliant grad student. Evan doesn’t know how much of Dallas Whitley she’ll be able to handle, especially when he wants to study with her outside the studio. She promises herself that she can just be friends with Dallas. He has a girlfriend, after all. And Evan needs to focus.

She can’t when the co-ed printing brings sales through the roof.

She can’t when her photographer wants to crank the heat for the next issue.

Every steamy shoot leaves Evan gasping for breath, her true feelings for Dallas clouded by their camera-charade. But the more time she spends with him in the real world, the more she risks someone finding out the truth about her.

She needs to decide.

Who gets Dallas—Rylan, or Evan?

I loved this! It’s sexy, shameless, fun, and a super fast read (and that cover is quite scandalous!).

I was immediately pulled in by the premise of this book, and that combined with the fact that I haven’t read a New Adult novel in a long time, paired me up with this excellent little novella. I easily finished this in one day, though I think if it had been longer I would have also finished it just as fast because the story telling and plot itself moved along so quickly.

I love a story with a lot of angst and build up, but if you are not, then I don’t think you would like this that much. The storyline is also kind of predictable, but it throws in different situations here and there that take a step back from the main story line and give you more “oomph” to the story.

Overall, I would say pick this up because it’s so good! And it was only 99 cents on Amazon! There are also sequels, but I think I’m going to keep this one on its own for now and maybe revisit the rest of the series later…

Losing It by Cora Carmack

Losing It (Losing It, #1)

Synopsis from Goodreads: Virginity.

Bliss Edwards is about to graduate from college and still has hers. Sick of being the only virgin among her friends, she decides the best way to deal with the problem is to lose it as quickly and simply as possible– a one-night stand. But her plan turns out to be anything but simple when she freaks out and leaves a gorgeous guy alone and naked in her bed with an excuse that no one with half-a-brain would ever believe. And as if that weren’t embarrassing enough, when she arrives for her first class of her last college semester, she recognizes her new theatre professor. She’d left him naked in her bed about 8 hours earlier.

Number of pages: 288
My review: (Side note: totally wish I had the cover pictured here. I like it so much better than the one I have which is here:
Losing It (Losing It, #1)
This being the second New Adult (ugh I hate that phrase) book I’ve ever read I didn’t have much to compare it to, but I digress. I still liked it! It just wasn’t very though provoking or a very deep novel.
Don’t get me wrong I loved this book I just had a couple…issues with it. I just felt the ending was sort of meh, and the whole thing felt so fake. Like it could never happen.
Of course it was very steamy and I liked the romance between the two, the passion. It just seemed like the way things worked out, it never would that way in the real world.
It was interesting to read a book from the point of a view of a girl who was graduating college. I’m not used to that (but then again I haven’t read very many New Adult books). I liked the interaction between all the friends and how close everyone felt. Even though at times, it just seemed that Bliss was a little impossible to be friends with. Always blushing or moping and thinking “I’m not beautiful!”
So, I guess what made me like this so much despite the little things I just mentioned was the overall premise of the book. The overall plot and storyline.
There were just little blips along the way that caused me to have some issues with the characters. Irregardless it’s one of those guilty pleasures and I can’t wait to get my hands on Faking It.
Definitely think you should be a little older if you’re going to be reading this one though (there’s quite a bit of naughtiness and cursing in it!)
See you soon!
