My Review

Back in February I was left (impatiently) waiting for the sequel to Chameleon Soul, the first book in the Chequered Flag series, and now I’m so excited to be able to share my thoughts on Twisted Mind with all of you!

Before reading Chameleon Soul, I wasn’t really into the whole race car shindig, until about a week after I reviewed that book I went home for a weekend and went to the NHRA drag races with my family for the first time. And oh my god, it was SO much fun! The thrills! The excitement! Needless to say, that made me even more anxious to get my hands on Twisted Mind because I began to view the story from a completely different angle.

However, I do have to say, even if you’re not a fan of drag racing, race cars, or anything of the sort, Mia Hoddell still does an excellent job of keeping the sport sexy and full of high-intensity, much like the romance that is woven through the story.

I was curious to see how Dustin and Taz’s relationship would grow throughout the story and it was beautiful! Both of them have a lot of demons that tend to keep them down, but together their like this unstoppable force that I just can’t get enough of. I was sad, as usual with Mia Hoddell’s books, that it ended so soon! Though, I will be excited to see if we get a glimpse of them in the third book in this series coming out soon (I hope!).

I leaned in, desperate to feel him.
Finally, his lips grazed mine in barely a whisper of a touch.
A moan of protest slipped from my lips when he parted and the musical sound of Dustin’s husky laugh caused me to shiver.
“We shouldn’t be doing this,” he murmured, shocking me when his lips scraped my ear.
“I really don’t care.”
Dustin cupped my jaw, his thumb swiping over my cheekbone. The touch drew my eyes to his.
“I should though.”
I rested my head further into his palm and covered the back of his hand with my own to keep him there. Turning, I pressed my lips to his palm. “What’s the worst that could happen?”
“You could break me.”
I nipped at the tip of his finger when he trailed it over my bottom lip. “Aren’t we both already broken?”
“You could shatter me like no one else, Taz.” Rather than meet my eyes he stared off into the distance over my shoulder. “You could destroy me.”
I reached up, taking his jaw between my fingers and forcing his attention back to me. “I don’t want to.”
“That doesn’t mean you won’t.”
“No, but it means I’ll do everything in my power to try not to.”
The resolve in his eyes wavered. He couldn’t meet my gaze for long. He exhaled heavily, and his jaw kept tensing beneath my palm.
“Dustin,” I said, drawing his focus back to me. “It’s only a kiss.”
It wasn’t. We both knew I was lying and if we started down this road it would lead to more.
Regardless, Dustin pulled me into him. Pressing on the small of my back, he didn’t stop until I was flush against his chest. With his other hand he swiped back a lock of hair to slide it behind my ear.
He lowered his head, dipping until his forehead rested against mine. “I’m trusting you, Taz.”
I responded in a whisper, “Me too. You’re not the only one who stands to lose, Dust.”
Finally, he closed the gap between us and his lips met mine slowly, but forcefully. He claimed and possessed me, marking me as his with his mouth.
Every ounce of pain and fear was shared through our kiss.
When I parted my lips Dustin’s tongue immediately swept into me. I moaned, raising my arms to encircle him. I ran my fingers through the shaggy locks of hair at the back of his neck, pulling on them until he grunted against me.
Even though no space remained between us, Dustin forced me against him harder then dropped his head to my shoulder. He placed a tender kiss directly over the pulse point in my neck and mumbled against my skin, “Please don’t break me, Taz.”

My Review

The first time I read a book by Mia Hoddell was two years ago and I’m so pleased to be bringing you yet another review for one of her awesome books! All the other books I have previously read by Mia were in the YA genre, so it was quite exciting to dive into the NA genre with this series, and I have to say I couldn’t be more impressed!

A lot of my issues with the NA genre stems from the stories feeling very…fake. And too sickly sweet and overloaded with romance and steamy bedroom scenes. Chameleon Soul, though, has just the right amount of romance while also tackling real life issues that made me feel as if I were also overcoming some challenges, right along with the main characters.

Raine, our main protagonist, was so authentic and awesome. A lot of NA romance characters are seen as these perfect women, but Raine has flaws and struggles that create a more three dimensional person that you can relate to on a much deeper level. Teo, our main hunk, also is not just another guy in the romance genre, he stands out and has awesome qualities (like being a Formula 1 driver? Hello, awesome!). I really liked the way that Mia built up their relationship and melded the two together without it coming off as sappy and cheesy.

This will be the perfect book to pick up just in time for Valentine’s Day and you’ll blow through it so quickly with the fast-paced writing and plot! I finished it in under a couple hours and now I’m aching for the next one! Hopefully we won’t be kept waiting too long 🙂

“Raine, wait!”
Footsteps thundered behind me, forcing me to run faster as my vision began tunnelling. Bouncing off the walls as I rounded corners, I attempted to trace my steps back to the exit through the labyrinth of hallways.
I could hear the footsteps growing louder, as if Nadine was right on my heels, but I couldn’t look without losing my rhythm.
Abruptly, I was jerked to a stop by a hand on my wrist. I spun at the touch, flinging my back against the wall with a scream. My movements were too fast to take anything in.
“What the f*** are you doing here?” The voice that snarled the words was not Nadine’s. Even full of malice I could never forget his tone. Despite that, my brain was no longer thinking logically.
I raised my hands instinctively to shield my face, the line between reality and my memories blurring. The brightly lit corridor was too tight and darkness encroached from every corner.
I was back in the alley. The rough bricks bit into my spine as I cowered into the building praying I could make myself invisible.
“No, not again,” I whimpered, my hands shaking. “Please, not again.”
In my mind they were coming at me, closing the distance.
No matter how tiny I made myself they could still see me.
“Don’t hurt me. Let me go!” White-hot panic rose in my chest, consuming me and fuelling the memory. Everything felt so similar, I wasn’t even seeing what was really in front of me.

She wants the leading role in everything but her own life.

Kayleigh Barrow always gets the leading role. Top of her class, well liked, and a good actress, she’s most comfortable on stage where she can pretend to be someone else and forget the real Kayleigh exists. However, when auditions for the latest production are opened up to the entire university, the lines between fantasy and reality start to blur.

The last person Kayleigh expected to audition was Aiden Hanson. Renowned player and popular on campus, Kayleigh has tried to conceal her feeling from him for years. She knows it would be stupid to think he’d want her or an actual relationship, but when they’re thrown together in the production, Kayleigh can no longer hide from him.

No matter how much she tries to distances herself, he’s always there. Neither of them can deny their attraction, but Kayleigh has to question Aiden’s motives. He’s never had a serious relationship and she refuses to be another conquest. Yet, when her acting starts to become real and she can no longer hide behind her character, Kayleigh must decide whether Aiden’s worth the risk, or if he’s only after a challenge and will end up breaking her heart.

*cries loudly because it’s the last story in the series*

I love how Mia Hoddell creates these characters that are equally parts awesome and lovable. I loved both Kayleigh and Aiden from the get-go, because while they appear to have wonderful lives on the outside, on the inside they could be dealing with a bunch of different emotions and problems.

Aiden and Kayleigh fit so well together too, I was definitely routing for them from the very beginning. His easy going attitude woks so well to soothe her innocent and shy demeanor. *sigh* I just love those types of stories. It wasn’t cliché though, because real issues were dealt with (very similar to all the other previous novellas in the series).

I also really like how we uncover more and more about each character as the story progresses and they get to know each other better; as if we’re getting to know them too and that’s always such a fun experience that I look for in novels. Mia Hoddell does everything so well in her novels from the plot, to character building, and I’m so sad that this is going to be the last in the series! I can’t wait to check out the rest of her works though!

Her dreams may cost Ellie her family, but ignoring them will cost her happiness.

Only one person knows what truly lies in Ellie Jeffords’ heart, and that’s herself. For almost three years she’s concealed her dreams and lived the life her parents expect her to by studying accountancy. She’s tried to follow their wishes, but they forgot to consider one important detail: Ellie’s happiness.

Hating the course she is studying, Ellie is failing, and the only person who was willing to help—her gran—has passed away. Not wanting to disappoint her family, she struggles on in silence, thinking she can rectify the problem before anyone finds out. So when a friend’s cousin, Justin, offers to tutor her, she jumps at the chance.

As the two meet frequently, and grow closer together, the pressure of exams starts to break Ellie. Justin wants her to confide in him, but he can’t persuade her to talk without revealing his own dark secret. With both of them hiding things, it tests their newly formed relationship. However, Justin refuses to give up on her. He forces her to make a choice between her parents’ dreams and her own, but the only problem is that both options may cost her something she loves.

This is the second to last book in the Seasons of Change (Volume 1) series *sob* but I definitely think that it’s going to be my favorite. I connected really well with Ellie through her struggles of wanting to be perfect in school and working hard towards her degree (thank god I don’t have parents who pressured me into something I didn’t want to do though).

I also go to school with a lot of people who are simply there because of their parents and so I see how it tears them up and it’s really sad. I think Ellie embodied that struggle in a very real way and Mia Hoddell was able to convey a lot of the pent up emotion that can be swirling through people’s minds (this is something she also did really well in the previous stories in the series). Speaking of previous novels in the series, I really liked how they had snippets here and there of previous characters.

Justin was super cute too! He’s definitely now on my list of book boyfriends. I loved his geeky demeanor, but that he was able to conquer his own fears whilst helping Ellie with hers. I just want to grab him and hug him tight!

Overall, a really great addition to the series and I can’t wait to see what the last one will have in store!

Amy wants to be back under the sun in Portugal. However, when her suggestion is overruled in favour of a skiing holiday, even she can’t turn it down. What she couldn’t have predicted is that the holiday could make her break the one, and only, rule she has: not to get into a serious relationship again.

When Amy first sees Luke, she knows something is wrong. He’s struggling to cope with everything and her need to help people makes him the perfect distraction from the cold. He hasn’t been to the Alps in five years and he swore to never ski again. But as his defences are broken by Amy’s persistence, the winter paradise begins to reawaken his desires.

However, with constant flashbacks triggering his anxiety, he’s torn, battling conflicting emotions as he becomes increasingly captivated by Amy. She has a rule though. She didn’t go on holiday to fall for someone and the last thing she needs is to ignore her own advice. Whether or not she can move past her insecurities will depend on whether Luke can face his biggest fear.

Winter Angel is a standalone novella, but is the second book in the Seasons of Change series.

Another excellent novel by Mia Hoddell! (Hey, that kinda rhymes…) With winter right around the corner, and snow already falling (like here in Colorado) this is the perfect read for the coldest season. While winter itself may be cold, Winter Angel was anything but. I flew through this in under an hour because the story and it’s characters were so intriguing and interesting to read about.

I wanted to unravel all their mysteries at once while also holding them tight and letting them know it would be okay. They all act like such real people that sometimes I felt as if I was reading someone’s diary about events that had happened some short time ago!

Amy is as hilarious as ever, and Luke is such a cutie that I loved both of them instantly. I also liked the fact that once again very real issues were dealt with, and none of it felt forced whatsoever. I can’t wait to read the next one!

Jenna Shaw ran away to escape her past. In fact, she jumped on a plane and flew to Portugal to try and forget it. However, it turns out leaving everything behind isn’t as easy as it sounds.

She thought she could move on and break free of her fears–that if she had some space the pain would stop. But as memories resurface due to an ill-timed joke, the past crashes into her present once more and she didn’t see it coming.

Jenna’s plans for normality are derailed by the charismatic Ethan Brooks. She sees him as an annoyance; he sees her as a challenge. But as he tries every trick known to him to impress her, they only serve to push her further away. He’s never faced this problem before and Ethan has to work harder than he ever has if he wants to win over and help his mysterious girl.

A young adult romance, this novella would be a great book for teenagers or as a feel-good summer read.

Short, sweet and excellent! Mia Hoddell has created complex characters and a well rounded plot in the space of a mere 160 pages, so bravo! I loved this book! You can clearly see how Jenna grows through a short amount of time and Ethan is simply Hottie McHottie pants (no complaining though wink wink).

Not only did I like the budding romance, but this is just one of those feel-good summer romance stories that take you back to the sun and surf (especially since the autumn chill is starting to set in here at school). Even though I wish it could have been a little longer, I still think the story works really well because it leaves you wondering what is going to happen next. Hopefully there will be some hints in the next one of the series (even though I know that one is about Jenna’s friend Amy).

Nevertheless, I am excited to start the next novella in the series and can’t wait to see what Mia Hoddell has in store for us next!

Excerpt

White. Gazing out of the small, circular window, it was the only colour he could see surrounding him. The bursts of light—which had broken through the heavy, grey clouds—were reflected back as the ground grew closer with each passing second. Not too long ago he had been blissfully unaware of the location his sister was dragging him to for a holiday. A bubble of excitement had surrounded him throughout the early morning as he got up, and stayed with him through travelling to the airport and catching the flight. However, it had burst as soon as the icy tips of the mountains appeared and the plane began its descent. Until that moment, he had hoped his guesses had been wrong.

His sister had carefully planned the trip, making sure to hide all clues as to where they were heading, and as she glanced across at him, it seemed as if she had been successful. Luke’s knuckles were white on the arm rests. He had claimed both of them, gripping them so hard they looked like they would snap under the force, or at least be moulded to the shape of his hands when he removed them.

Ellie watched as he took in a shaky breath, but she heard no exhale.

“Luke?”

The silence that filled the space around them was icier than the Alps they had just flown over. Her brother’s gaze remained fixed on the window, watching as the ground, and his fate, drew ever closer. Deep, ragged breaths steamed up the window, which was almost touching his nose. Desperately, he tried to control the tremors shaking his body, and his pounding heart, from the fear that washed over him in waves.

“Luke, please, say something.” Worry had crept into Ellie’s tone. She had thought her idea would do him good, that forcing him to face everything would turn him back into his old self. Ellie missed the brother she had grown up with and wanted him back. However, seeing his eyes wide with fear, his jaw clenched in anger, and his arms tense with both, suddenly she wasn’t so sure about her plan.

“You promised, Ellie. You swore you wouldn’t pressure me, and I trusted you with that. You know how I feel about this.” His voice was sharp and curt as he spoke through clenched teeth, trying to keep a hold on his emotions.

The urge to flee surged within him. He wanted to go home, to get off the plane and board the next flight straight back to England, but he couldn’t. Not only was the plane still minutes from landing—trapping him in the confines of economy class, which felt even smaller as realisation forced him to understand Ellie’s plans—but he also refused to waste more money on the pointless trip Ellie had conned him into taking. If he was going to use the money he had earned from before everything changed, it would be on his own terms.

“You’ll enjoy it when you’re there,” Ellie stated, brushing off his comments like they meant nothing to her.

“That’s easy for you to say. You don’t have to live with, or through, what I have.” Luke was trying hard to control his voice. Had they been in private, he would have already been shouting. The cramped environment meant that Ellie was getting off lightly, but he swore that when they reached their chalet, he would not hold back. She had no right to interfere with his life.

“Never tell me I didn’t live through it, Luke. I was there when it happened, in the hospital, and when you got home. I was there through it all. It may not have been me, but it wasn’t like it had no effect on my life,” Ellie hissed. It was the only way she could convey her anger without disturbing other passengers.

“Why though, Ellie? Why is this such a big deal to you?” Luke’s eyes were full of sorrow as he turned to face his sister for the first time, begging to understand her reasoning for putting him through something she knew would hurt him.
